The Gospel has been penetrating Bhutan!
For a long time, Bhutan was one of the most closed nations in the world. The majority of its people are Tibetan Buddhists. Tibetan Buddhism is by far the most resistant form of Buddhism to the Gospel. It is truly dark, demonic, and full of real satanic power. It is still very closed...but God is working in Bhutan like at no other time in its history.
We started to hear about Bhutan from friends who had a heart to reach the nation and who had taken some trips and were partnering with local Bhutanese believers. I had met a couple of them in the U.S.
But then Bhutanese started arriving in the Middle Eastern nation we live in - much like the Nepalis who started arriving 15 years ago, many are not Christians. But 15 years later, I would say most of the Nepalis we know have become Christians and there are numerous Nepali churches now all around the world!
It is now happening in the same way with the Bhutanese. When we first started meeting Bhutanese nationals, there were almost no Christians. Some of them had never heard the name of Jesus! (we found out how to say it in Dzongkha (the language of Bhutan) and it was shocking that they had never heard the Name!
We downloaded some Bhutanese Bibles on their smartphones (praise God for the internet!) Sadly we learned that the Bible translation is quite antiquated and seems to be in a high level of Dzongkha that is inaccessible to some of the Bhutanese. Pray that a newer, more simplified version is developed (or if it currently exists, that it gets a wider distribution!)
Recently not only have we met Bhutanese who have come to faith, but actually some of them are quite zealous and reaching out.
A quick story to illustrate - my wife met a Bhutanese young (in her 20s) woman believer who spoke incredible English. They started talking regularly and she asked my wife if she'd like to come and teach a group of Bhutanese believers who meet DAILY for 2 HOURS online! Talk about commitment. This young woman is here in the Middle East, but the rest of the group is in Bhutan (which happens to currently be in lock-down due to COVID).
So a couple of days ago, my wife joined the Bhutanese Zoom Fellowship (my name for it) and got to preach/teach. I guess it was encouraging to them as they have asked us teach again - so we will do so in a couple of days.
COVID has been bad for almost everybody and everything...but in this case, God has opened doors through technology (stuff we wouldn't have been familiar with before the pandemic) to be a small part in sowing into, building into what God is doing amongst the Bhutanese.
Truly the Gospel is penetrating every single part of the earth!
For such a time as this!
