Wrong Biblical Interpretations had/have/will have DEVASTATING Consequences

One passage that Christians have different viewpoints on is the meaning of Genesis 6:1-4 - here's the passage:

6:1 When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in  man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4 The nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.

First of all, there was a uniform understanding/interpretation by ALL Christians in the early church until another view, called the "Sethite View", was articulated first by Julius Africanus and then popularized by Augustine in the 5th century (the 400s!). 

It appears that this view may have first appeared amongst the rabbis in the 2nd century AD (who were the descendants of the Pharisees who rejected Jesus as the Messiah). Note that ALL JEWS before that time held the same view that the earliest Christians and the Apostles had held. Don't forget that Jesus warned His followers (and us) to beware of the leaven [the teaching] of the Pharisees (Matt. 16:6)!

What view was that? The view that the "sons of God" were angelic beings. The "Sethite" view claims that the "sons of God" in Genesis 6 were human beings. The consensus view of ancient Judaism, the Apostolic and sub-Apostolic Church (till the 5th century), and the Dead Sea Scroll community was that they were angelic beings that had sexual intercourse with human women that produced a hybrid offspring called the nephilim. (sometimes called the Giants as in the Septuagint/LXX)

It should be particularly noted that this view, the angelic being view, is the one that the New Testament also endorses. In other words, this view is the APOSTOLIC VIEW. Where you ask? How about 2 Peter 2 and the Book of Jude! 

And sadly this FALSE INTERPRETATION, the Sethite View, is a human tradition that has had and will have dire consequences.

For one thing, much of the Old Testament doesn't make sense with the "natural" explanation whereas when one takes the "supernatural" explanation, many OT passages become clear - the 'gods' of the Old Testament are actually fallen angelic entities, real supernatural beings with genuine spiritual power. I promise that this interpretive key helped me to understand the Old Testament in a way that studying in 3 different seminaries and 1 Christian college were never able to do. Even the timing and necessity of the Flood itself don't make sense without the explosion of perversity, violence, and the occult practices that characterized what happened in the wake of the sons of God's incursion. I would strongly urge anyone to read the late Dr. Michael Heiser's book, The Unseen Realm: Recovering the Supernatural Worldview of the Bible.

Beyond that, much of the New Testament ends up being misunderstood. Who were the "unclean spirits" that Jesus spent so much time and effort to cast out of people? Why was that such a critical part of His Kingdom ministry? Beyond empowerment, what was the purpose in the coming of the Holy Spirit? Why such an emphasis on holiness in the New Testament? Where did that defilement originate? (Hint: it wasn't in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3). And as I've mentioned above, many Christian pastors and Bible teachers today have no idea what 2 Peter 2 and Jude really mean. They don't know what tartarus (2 Pet 2:4) is or why it is important. How did those angels get there? For more insight, I would have to recommend another of Dr. Heiser's books, Reversing Hermon: Enoch, the Watchers, and the Forgotten Mission of Jesus Christ.

As a Christian in full-time professional ministry, I didn't understand most of what I've just written until quite recently. What harm did it do? Maybe I'm overstating the importance of this blog post's thesis. I'll have to admit that had I understood these things earlier, I would have been far more effective in my evangelism. I would have had a far deeper understanding of the demonic realm and its strategies. I also think I would have become more of one of the Sons of Issachar (1 Chron. 12:32) far earlier, one who discerned the times. When one doesn't understand Genesis 6 correctly, doesn't know about the origin of demons and the ways they work, has a more limited understanding as to the mission and ministry of Jesus, and doesn't rightly understand what "as in the Days of Noah" (Matt 24:37) meant, it is obviously going to hinder one's ability to discern the times that will be like those days of Noah originally were. 

Why, however, the urgency right now in writing this post? Because the past 100 years in general and the past decade, in particular, have led millions of the planet's inhabitants to believe the alien/extraterrestrial phenomenon. It is no exaggeration to say that an entire false religion has developed, in no small part to the work of the late Zecharia Sitchin whose books from his first The 12th Planet (1976) have sold millions of copies. If belief in extraterrestrials does constitute a type of religion (as I believe it does) then Sitchin is one of that religion's high priests. If you don't believe Sitchin's work has been influential, you might be surprised to learn that it has influenced even official voices in the Vatican and countless other Christians who have adopted aspects and elements of his thesis.

This "false religion" has all sorts of 'doctrines' - i.e. that aliens created life on this planet and that these extraterrestrials are coming back to help mankind solve its problems. Hollywood films have been promoting these 'narratives' in their movies for decades now - think for example of Jodie Foster's famous movie, Contact (1997).

I would direct the reader to a website the late Dr. Heiser developed to counter the claims of Sitchin called Sitchin is Wrong. I cannot think of another resource that would better equip Christians to prepare to share their faith with followers of this modern false religion!

How does a proper understanding of Genesis 6:1-4 help us? Because this is exactly what ancient Judaism and the Apostolic Church understood happened "in the Days of Noah"! Superior beings, called the "sons of God", came down and not only corrupted mankind through their interbreeding with human women, but according to these Jews and Christians, taught mankind things - such as technology, medicine, and other aspects of their superior knowledge and perverted ways. For more of the details, someone only needs to read the Early Church fathers and theologians who commented on these things in detail. Or one would only need to read well-known 2nd Temple Jewish literature such as the Book of Enoch or the Book of Giants.

A false interpretation of the Genesis passage we are considering renders believers today entirely unaware of not only what happened, but arguably what will happen again according to Jesus' warnings in Matthew 24. Revelation 9 describes the release of some of those "spirits in prison" (1 Pet. 3:19) at the end of the age. But if you've got Genesis 6 wrong and you don't know what the abyss was/is (hint: tartarus), then you are walking in the dark as to what could very well be happening in our days with regard to the growing belief in extraterrestrials (aliens) and what we can expect from them when they make 'contact' at some point in the future. In Paul's day, believers were told they are "not unaware of his [the devil's] schemes" (2 Cor. 2:11). I would argue that every Christian who has gotten Genesis 6 wrong, from Augustine in the 5th century until now, is NOT aware of the devil's plan and his dark kingdom's agenda. The Sethite view was/is itself a demonic deception designed to keep God's people in deception. 

If we are honest about the generation in which we are living, we will see that many of the things that happened in Genesis 6 have been happening now - an unprecedented explosion of sexual perversion (think films, the internet, and the modern porn industry), occult practices (think of modern Luciferianism, magick and many so-called New Age practices), violence (from nuclear weapons to the abortion industry), and the spread of the Transhumanism movement (remember Genesis 6 was an attempt to change human DNA by polluting our human bloodline through the illicit offspring of angelic and human unions). Remember that the so-called Covid "vaccines" were not vaccines at all, but rather they were, in fact, experimental gene therapies that resulted in a permanent change to the people who took them. Abortion was used to develop, test and produce all of the shots that were accepted (something the vast majority of Christians who took them were never told). "Vaccine" injuries have killed innumerable people and countless others are now struggling with ongoing devasting effects all the while no one is admitting to these things. "Safe & Effective" was pure deception! 

This is precisely the type of phenomenon that happened in the original Days of Noah - the Watchers, those fallen sons of God, brought to mankind 'medical treatments' that were unknown before that at that time afflicted the people on earth. Cross-species sexual perversion was taught to humankind (modeled) by these fallen angelic entities. Why do we find with the coming of the Law the prohibitions against such sexual depravity? I even wonder if the very practice of abortion itself was taught to mankind by the fallen angels?! Nothing empowers the demonic realm like the spilling of innocent blood.

And to cap off my argument that we may well be in a Days of Noah 2.0 type of hour, the widespread belief, a demonic deception, that alien life is currently attempting to 'make contact' with humanity to assist us in our evolution and to solve our problems. This looks like Genesis 6 replay! (unless you happen to ascribe to the Sethite interpretation!)
